Sustainable infrastructure through knowledge transfer: insights from the exchange in Amman

As part of the operator partnership, Hamburg Wasser and hanseWasser have been working together with their Jordanian partner Miyahuna in Amman for five years on the targeted optimisation of operational processes in the water and wastewater sector.

Another milestone in this collaboration was a five-day technical exchange from 24 to 31 January 2026. Technical specialists from the “Sewerage Systems” working group worked intensively on key levers for greater performance and cost-efficiency in network operations. The focus was on operations and maintenance, GIS systems, occupational safety, and key performance indicators (KPIs).

In addition to the inspection of existing wastewater networks and facilities, the available inspection and maintenance equipment was analysed in particular. The technical exchange revealed potential for increasing efficiency and operational safety – especially through the greater use of digital systems and standardised processes.

The experts from Hamburg Wasser provided concrete recommendations: at present, operations at Miyahuna are largely event-driven. Cleaning measures are mostly carried out only when necessary. In order to use resources more effectively and sustainably reduce costs, the introduction of standardised operating procedures (SOPs), a systematic maintenance strategy, and strategic rehabilitation planning is recommended. A key prerequisite for this is the development and use of GIS and inspection data, as well as powerful IT systems.

The result: greater operational efficiency, improved supply reliability, and a significant reduction in unnecessary infrastructure costs.

The exchange was rounded off with a shared dinner featuring traditional Jordanian cuisine – a fitting setting for further strengthening the partnership.

The technical work will now continue in digital formats. As a next step, an online training session on sewer inspection using camera technology is planned in order to further support the sustainable implementation of the measures developed.
