Zaporizhzhiavodokanal

The Zaporizhzhiavodokanal municipal enterprise is responsible for drinking water treatment and supply as well as drainage in the region. The supply area comprises around 725,000 inhabitants and over 9,000 industrial companies in Zaporizhzhia, the urban settlements of Vilniansk and Mykolaivka, as well as the villages of Bohatyrovo, Lezheno, Balabyne and Kushuhum. The company has two water supply stations, which take the water to be treated from the River Dnipro, as well as 29 water pumping stations. The distribution network covers a total length of around 2,260 kilometres and the wastewater network around 980 kilometres. Over half of the pipes are worn out or operate in emergency mode.

Ruhrverband

As a water management company under public law, Ruhrverband (Essen, Germany) has been supplying the Ruhr region with its water management infrastructure since 1913. The supply area currently covers around 4.6 million people and the Ruhrverband operates around 1,000 water management facilities, including dams, reservoirs and sewage treatment plants, in the river catchment area of around 4,485 square kilometres. Due to its high population and industrial density, the region's water consumption per unit area is seven times higher than the national average.

Rheinisch-Westfälische Wasserwerksgesellschaft mbH (RWW)

Rheinisch-Westfälische Wasserwerksgesellschaft mbH (RWW) (Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany) supplies the western Ruhr region and the neighbouring Münsterland with drinking and industrial water. The company serves over 900,000 customers and the local industry. The RWW has been in existence for over 100 years, employs 450 people and has a pipeline network of over 3000 kilometres.

The project

The city of Zaporizhzhia is located close to the front line of the war and critical infrastructure has been severely damaged. This confronts the Zaporizhzhiavodokanal company with the major challenge of maintaining the water and wastewater supply for the population.

The company is not only struggling with increased material requirements, but also with financial bottlenecks caused by the destruction of many contributing companies in the region, as well as the flight of large parts of the population. In addition, the war and the loss of Russian and Belarusian suppliers have made it difficult to procure materials.

Objectives

The primary aim of this partnership is to provide support with procurements and to exchange expertise. The equipment requirements for the wastewater supply were determined in joint discussions, such as the purchase of drilling machines, a hydraulic unit or a hydro-cleaning machine.

RWW also supports the reconstruction of the water supply system, providing expertise and contacts in purchasing as well as technical knowledge.
